A welcome is made up of small things: being greeted by name, understanding what happens next and knowing where to find a familiar adult. These details can be explored with the people who live and work in a home, using communication approaches that suit each individual.
A starting point for discussion
Look at the environment from the perspective of someone arriving for the first time. What feels clear? What might feel confusing? A familiar object, a quiet place and a simple explanation may each have a different meaning for different people. Record the questions that need an individual response.
- What do we understand about the question?
- Whose perspective would help us explore it?
- What needs to be checked before any next step?
Agreeing the next step
