Begin with the task you want to improve. A shared description of the problem makes it easier to compare possible approaches, including changes that do not require new software. Ask the people who will use a system what they need from it.

A starting point for discussion

Consider accessibility, training, support and the experience of people affected by the system. Ask suppliers to explain their claims and demonstrate the tasks that matter to your setting. Privacy, procurement and security decisions need the appropriate organisational review.

  • What do we understand about the question?
  • Whose perspective would help us explore it?
  • What needs to be checked before any next step?

Agreeing the next step

Make a brief record of the questions raised and the action agreed. Keep identifying or confidential details within your organisation’s authorised systems. Revisit the conversation through the appropriate team or supervision arrangements.

A question for reflection: what would a useful next conversation look like?
